JUST A literary footnote.   According to Henry James in <Daisy Miller> 
Americans should avoid the Colliseum at night, and according Edith Wharton in "Roman 
Fever" the same advice is given though the "fever" mentioned in the latter is 
different in its outcome than in the former.   Of course, these are stories 
belonging to the late 19th c or early 20th, and   I'm sure things have changed
