[Idyllchat] How to take a peek at Venice?

Just got home from work and have read all the good replies. But I'm going to chime in anyway.

A few years ago I was in Venice for 7 days in the first part of October with Elderhostel. The sun shone the day we arrived and the day we left. For 5 straight days we had Aqua Alta (high water) that flooded many of the streets, mostly in the middle of the afternoon and lasted about 3 hours. Only in the high tourist areas do they put up those raised walkways. Every where else one sloshes through, and there is usually a thunder, rain and wind storm that accompanies it.

Since then I go in the summer - usually June and July. August is not good because that's when the Venetians go on holiday (vacation) and close shop until they get back - mostly 2 to 4 weeks. Only the heavy tourist areas stay open. Yes it's sometimes hot and humid, but, since I live on the coast of VA, I am used to that kind of weather.

If I were you, I'd not try to take a peek of Venice. Wait and go on a 2-week Untour. I've been on 3 of the Venice Untours, and now go almost yearly on my own and spend 2 to 3 months there, renting an apartment in different areas. This summer I am staying off Via Garibaldi, in the far eastern end of the city, in a mostly typical Venetian neighborhood, away from most tourists and gypsies.

If you insist on taking a peek, get Rick Steves' Venice book. It has suggestions for 1-, 2-, and 3-day sightseeing. Plus lots of other info.

Subject: [Idyllchat] How to take a peek at Venice?

We are going to be in Italy in October. We are spending two weeks on an
Untour in Tuscany North. Prior to that we are spending a week in Verona.
We have never been to Venice but do not have time to this trip to really add
it to our itinerary. However, we are considering trying to at least take a
peek at it. To those who are experienced with Venice, if you only had time
to spend a day and one night in Venice and you had a car, how would you do
it? Where would you leave the car? Where would you stay for the night?

We know it is not the best way to do Venice and someday we will return
there, maybe for an Untour week, but not this trip. Or is it crazy to even
consider this little diversion?

Appreciate your opinions.
