Patricia,
Yes one day and a night is worth it in Venice. Go and walk and walk
and walk!
I agree, it is better to leave the car in Verona if you can and take
the train to Venice. If you must drive there are two parking options
on the Island. There are several carparks in the Piazzale Roma, but
these are more expensive and a pain to get to. Better to use the
Tronchetto parking garage, a 3,500 space garage that is about 18 euros
a day. From there you take the water bus (vaporetti ) to your hotel.
Be prepared for some walking with luggage as well, up and down stairs
etc. You definitely want to travel lite in Venice.
I can suggest the hotel Campiello:

Nothing fancy, but nice basic place in the center near St Marks with a
very nice breakfast included. Wonderful english speaking staff.
Remember hotels in Venice are expensive. This place is moderate by
Venice standards. DON"T stay on the mainland in Mestre. Cheaper, but
ugly. Half the charm of Venice is walking around in the evening when
all the day tours and cruise ship passengers have left.
From Tronchetto to Campiello: waterbus Line 82 direction S. ZACCARIA
(via Giudecca) S. Zaccaria stop
Cheers,
Scott
