[Idyllchat] flying with wine

Carol,
I love wine more than the next guy, but I don't recommend trying to
bring any back with you to the States. a) it is heavy; b) it is in
breakable containers; c) Unless it is really something special, you can find
the same wine or a very suitable substitute for it at a good wine merchant
here.
I once hand-carried 3 bottles of wine home with me on a plane, only to
arrive back in Illinois and find the same wine at my local wine shop CHEAPER
than what I paid for it at the winery.
That was probably 20 years ago. I have never tried to bring wine home
since.
A 4th reason for not buying wine to bring home with you: You will find
that the wine will never be as good as when you drank it Rome, or Tuscany,
or wherever.
Part of what makes it memorable is the whole experience -- the romance
of the place and the time you are enjoying the wine, whether it be a picnic
on a hillside in Germany overlooking the Rhine, or at a quaint little bistro
in Paris. You can't recapture all of that by opening a bottle of the same
wine in your kitchen back home in East Podunk, USA.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
    Enjoy your trip.
