[Idyllchat] flying with wine

Well, that just points up the wisdom of packing everything in ziploc bags. All my clothes are in plastic bags -- one for underwear and socks, one for tops, one for slacks, one for pjs, toiletries, etc. When my bag gets pulled for hand screening, everything is easily viewed and easily repacked because it is just a matter of replacing the bags in the suitcase -- no refolding. Then if something does get spilled or if the bag is subjected to heavy rain, the contents stay dry. In addition, you know that your clothes haven't actually been handled by anyone. Get the gallon size ziplocs for large items -- they work great. You can squeeze the air out of any size once the clothes are inside and things take up less room in the suitcase. I also like using plastic bags because it is easy and cheap to replace them once they get icky. Forget about the packing cubes that are sold everywhere -- they are heavier than the bags and not as flexible shape-wise for packing.
I brought a bottle of wine back from Germany last fall. I made sure it was thoroughly wrapped in several plastic bags and sealed with duct tape (everyone travels with some duct tape, I hope) and then well cushioned by my clothes. Made it home just fine -- my biggest concern was that someone would pilfer it when the bag was checked, but happily it was an unfounded concern.
So bring your wine back in your checked luggage -- it's your only choice if you want to bring some back. Odds are it will make it home just fine and you'll be able to enjoy it.
