Walter,

When you get all of your information from Untours that will explain
the difference in the rental insurance coverage between your Travel
Insured policy, if you have taken it out, and signing up for
insurance with Avis. It is my understanding that one is well advised
to have coverage rather than depend on the coverage afforded by your
own US auto policy or credit card since those may not be recognized
in European countries. As I recall a fundamental difference in
coverage from the Travel Insured policy and the Avis purchased one is
that in an accident with the Avis policy you can just walk away with
no further iliabilities. With the Travel Insured policy you would be
required to pay for damages locally up to some amount then be
reimbursed by Travel Insured when you return. Last fall we opted to
just go with the Travel Insured coverage since we has already
purchased it anyway.

I have read that officially you are supposed to have an international
drivers license in Italy but the rental car companies do not check
for it. I had mine last fall and they did not ask to see it. However,
I also read that Italy is one of the countries that if you get
stopped by the police for any reason, or get involved in an accident,
and do not have an international drivers license, you are likely
subject to a substantial fine on the spot. I chose the 'safe' route
and got one. It is a no brainer if you have a AAA office handy. Most
of them can issue it and are equipped to take the photo needed also.
I think mine costs about $16, including the photo costs.
