Hi Phil: THe chat line always produces interesting replies on this subject! My husband, a very stubborn devotee of American Express Travelers checks, finally gave it up about four years ago and now swears by the ATM. We are fortunate, if you have been following the other thread regarding various "cards" and how they charge fees, you will have read thatt we have a card which does not charge fees for withdrawals or charges.

Why did he stop AMEX travelers checks? On a trip to London, where banks (other than a specific American Express office) began to charge fees. If you do decide to continue, and I can't imagine why--go to AMEX website and get the locations of offices in cities wherever you intend to cash them, so you don't run into a fee situation.

Perhaps he was also influenced when I growled when we had to waste time going to an American Express office, not convenience to our location, perhaps even waiting in line? And, where isn't there an ATM, which takes less than 3 minutes to withdraw the currency of your choice? Whatever you decide, have a great trip. Cheers. Joan.

I've been following all the e-mails on credit cards, etc.
my question is: are there any problems using American Express Traveler Cheques in Switzerland and Italy?
              Thanks, Phil
