[Idyllchat] American Express Travel Cheques In Swiss & Italy

I remember in 2000 having to hunt down the American Express office in Rome.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure if this was because my friend preferred to
exchange them for local cash or if he was forced to. I do know (at the time)
that that was where he got the best exchange rate for them. I can't help you
more because I haven't used them in a while.
That trip was the first vacation that I relied on ATMs, and I haven't gone
back. The network to the US went out that first day, and I couldn't get
cash, but it was back up the next day. I had no other problems the rest of
the trip. I have been back to Europe 4 times since then, and I haven't had a
problem except for Italy in '04. Italy was starting to have some real
identity theft problems then and charges and ATM withdrawals were getting
denied until we called our banks. We told them we were calling from Italy,
and the charges were real. Everything went smooth after that. Since that
trip, I always call before I leave the country to let them know that I am
leaving the country. They put a note on my account, and I have no problems.
