[Idyllchat] Packing for Switzerland

Sandra, we just returned from Switzerland, and here's how we handled the
situation.
We normally have a rolling carry-on bag, in addition to our checked luggage,
which we don't collect at the airport. This year, we put our liquid items
in the carry-on bag, checked it, and picked it up in Zurich. That adds a
little time in Zurich, but not much. My wife needed some liquids on board
(eye drops, nose spray, etc.). Prescription liquids are OK, but she had to
produce her passport at security to prove they were hers. The
non-prescription ones are OK as long as they are under 4 ounces. We used my
backpack for other carry-on items, such as books.
Coming home, we used the same process. Be aware that the rules for
non-prescription liquids are different in Zurich than in the U.S. They
wanted to confiscate even the small amounts, until they were convinced that
she really needed them. They wanted a doctor's note to that effect. We're
planning to get such a note for next year, assuming that the rules won't be
relaxed.
Have fun in the Heartland. We had great weather there the last 2 weeks.
Brian Cooley.

I wonder if anyone has advice on this dilemma. It's occurred to me,
packing for our 9/19 departure for the Swiss Heartland, that we
shouldn't pack liquid or gel stuff in carry-on luggage, but that we
won't get our bags until Thursday in Switzerland. I can deal with
packing medications and a change of clothes in our carry-on, but what
are people doing about stuff like toothpaste and other toiletries? And
can one take contact lenses with a couple of ounces of lens fluid in a
handbag or carryon?
