In 2002 we stayed at Soggiorno Battistero (http://
www.soggiornobattistero.it/) in Florence. If they want central
location, this is it! It is a B&B and the rooms literally look down
on the Baptistery and Duomo square. It is run by an Italian man and
his American born wife. We enjoyed our stay there very much although
you have to be willing to climb quite a few stairs to the third floor
location.
According to the Rick Steves 2006 Italy guidebook, they offer a
discount for paying cash also.
