Carol,  We spent some time in Costa Rica in 1990 attending a Spanish 
language class for four weeks.  It was a package arrangement based in 
San Jose including morning Spanish classes five days per week, afternoon 
and week ends touring.   It also included room and board with a Costa 
Rican family.  It was a fun vacation coupled with learning the language 
and culture, although we have lost the Spanish by now.  In a way it was 
similar to the Untours experience, but we didn't get to shop and cook in 
our own apartment.
    The tours included:
volcanoes, the gold museum in San Jose, a coffee plantation, the 
university, and an earthquake (not recommended).  Actually we did the 
earthquake one weekend on our own when we were staying in a B & B which 
shuddered and shook, but did not fall down.
