Ellen,
That was some very good information about how the size of the carry-ons are checked.
After passing the size test are the bags then emptied to check their contents or how is the next step handled?
Robert

  Dear Jayne,
According to my sister, who flew BA through Heathrow this past Wednesday, they have changed the carry-on checking method. In the past, they put your bag into a metal cage that was shaped like a suitcase. Now they have plywood inserts that make them into rigid boxes. As long as you can maneuver your bag into the box, you should be ok. Soft sided carry-ons might, therefore, be your best bet. Of course it all depends on the person checking you in. Sometimes you get someone friendly, sometimes not. Good Luck!

I have really appreciated all of the correspondence on the dos and don'ts for tote bags on British Air. I am having a devil of a time finding a tote bag that fits their size regulation. Can someone tell me how they are checking sizes? Are you fitting it into a box, do they take a tape measure out? I have a collapsible bag that is 1" deeper than the allowed 6" and smaller in one of the other dimensions. I was thinking if I don't fill it completely it would certainly fit in a box. Any thoughts?

    Robert,

Even if someone has recently flown to/from Europe through London, things may well change by the time you go.

Rick Steves has been updating his web page on the travel restrictions: http://www.ricksteves.com/news/travelnews/0608/airport_security.html

His page provides a link to the BA site itself. If you want to go to it directly, it is: https://lfn.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/lfn.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=2355&p_sid=Gvw18-fi&p_lva=2350&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPSZwX3NvcnRfYnk9JnBfZ3JpZHNvcnQ9JnBfcm93X2NudD0xMiZwX3Byb2RzPSZwX2NhdHM9JnBfcHY9JnBfY3Y9JnBfc2VhcmNoX3R5cGU9YW5zd2Vycy5zZWFyY2hfbmwmcF9wYWdlPTE%2A&p_li=#

That is a very long URL string, but it is the direct one.

Here is another BAA URL that I found with more general information: http://www.baa.com/portal/controller/dispatcher.jsp?CiID=566cefdec403d010VgnVCM10000036821c0a____&CtID=a22889d8759a0010VgnVCM200000357e120a____&Ct=B2C_CT_PRESS_RELEASE&ChPath=Corporate^Media%20Centre^News%20Releases^Results

If you have trouble with those two URL's, just use this one and work your way to the security info: http://www.baa.com/

    Good luck!

Has anyone flown British Air to Europe and back in the past few weeks? We will have a group flying to and from Zurich via London next month and the ladies are particularly concerned about the restrictions on make-up including lipstick. Any recent experiences along this line would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Robert
