I recommend taking a drive from Nice to Monaco along the coast, the scenery
is just spectacular. If you stop at any of the small villages along the
way, you'll get to taste the best Mediterranean food and wine ever. This is
also a way to avoid the crowds. On the way back to Nice we had a wonderful
dinner in Villefrance, which is considered one of the jewels of the Riviera.
If you go to local non-touristy restaurants in Nice, you may encounter some
annoyed looks but this was probably because we didn't speak a word of
French and so ordering food took some time (but half the fun was ordering
things without knowing what you'll get). There seem to be many Brits in
Nice who own properties there and are almost treated as locals, which is
interesting.
Monte Carlo is touristy but worth a day trip for a tour of the Royal Palace
and the church where Princess Grace was married and is now buried.
