You might be looking for the foam earplugs that sell in Walgreens and other
pharmacies. I've used them for 10+ years. They come in little boxes
containing about 10+. You roll them into a small cylinder and insert into the ear.
I buy the ones with the greatest decibel rating. They don't cost very much,
about $3-4 and are certainly much cheaper than the Bose, Sony,.etc.
Furthermore, they fit in your pocket and don't react to X-ray. Be ready though to
explain their use to any "newbie" TSA personnel who may look at them with
suspicion. They are also reusable, can be washed in a small laundry bag, air
dried and used again and again. My current supply is several years old. I also
use them at night to muffle dog snores, spouse snores (no real reason for the
order there except I no longer have the spouse snores since I no longer have
the spouses or is that "spice" since I don't know the plural of spouse), late
night neighbor parties, early Rhine River traffic, trams running outside
your window if you didn't get the garden side in the Pension, night train noises
if you are trying to get maximum usage from a day with your Eurail pass,
etc. They will enable you to hear the sound of the telephone albeit muffled and
a really loud alarm clock. On the plane, they muffle a good amount of
sound, yet will allow you to put on the plane headphones and listen to the
in-flight entertainment(???) if you increase the volume. If the entertainment is
bad, use the headphones without sound and you decrease further the sound of the
blah, blah going on around you. However, you will have to keep your eyes
open for the drink and food cart or you may not hear the flight attendant
asking what your choices might be. You will also find them in a variety of colors.
I get bright red. It is a very clear indication to your seatmates that you
have no real reason to hear their opinions, life stories, etc. It also keeps
them from using the rest room excessively since they are certain you won't
hear if they ask if they can get buy. Stay alert though, if they get really
fidgety, you will eventually have to move. If your seatmate is your spouse,
this is that one opportunity to honestly say you didn't hear them since they
accuse you of having selective hearing at any other time.
I think that is all I can tell you.
