I, too had a similar experience in Rome with a fanny pack, in front, with  my 
hand on it.  "They" had unzipped it to my hand and reached and removed  my 
wallet!!!  I was floored.  I knew about the Gypsies but thought I  was careful.  
Now, I no longer use a fanny pack or wallet and separate my  money from 
charge cards.  I use a neck wallet inside of my clothes and my  husband uses a 
money belt.  
 
Also, watch your luggage as you are unloading in the big cities.  They  will 
grab your luggage and I came to the conclusion that chain handles on hand  
bags are not just fashion. 
 
They don't mug you.  
 
But, don't let that keep you from going to Italy.  It's a wonderful  place, 
friendly people, great food and wine and beautiful.  In fact we are  going 
again.  
 
We have done Tuscany and also driven to the northern area.  Either is  
wonderful!
