Carol and Tom,
I cannot help you about returning a car to Rome, but I am sure the
Untours staff can give you some advice. They can also put you in
touch with the Umbria Untours on site person who is very
knowledgeable about that. We were on the Umbria Untour this fall and
I know some of the people there when we were returned their car to
Rome instead of Spoleto, which was our pickup point for the cars.
I can tell you that we found Untours to be quite flexible and helpful
on these matters. We were traveling to the Cinque Terre area after
our Untour in Umbria and wished to drive there since it was much more
efficient that the train. When we queried the Untours staff about
this we found that it was no problem to take the car to La Spezia and
leave it at an Avis agency there. In fact, we learned we could keep
the car longer than our two weeks by just paying for the extra days!
All this had to, of course, be arranged with the Untours people in
advance.
As to flying into and out of different locations, we have found that
to not be a problem. Web sites like Travelocity and Expedia have
places on their search page where you can designate multiple legs.
That allows you to pick different cities instead of a simple round
trip. We have found it to be useful also to check individual airline
web sites for fares. If the trip can be handled on one airline, that
may well get better fares than the other sites. But check out Rome,
Milan, Venice, Florence. All are possibilities. I don't know where
you are flying from. But you may find your flight arrangements
significantly better into and/or out of the different places.
The bottom line is - think flexibly! Decide where you would prefer to
fly to and out of first. Then look at the options for local
transportation; train, your rental car, etc. I might mention that the
train between Rome and Florence is a fast train and there are now
stops between those two. We have taken it a couple of times.
I hope that gives you some ideas.
