Several months ago I asked for info on Costa Rica and
got several informative posts. Some of you asked that
I let you know how our trip went even though this is
not an "Untour" location. We went the first two weeks
in November which is just before "tourist season". We
went with another couple, rented a car, and did "our
own thing." Costa Rica is a beautiful country with
much diversity in "flora and fauna" depending on the
area. There was even an area that reminded us of
Bavaria and had in fact a German settlement of people
there..German bakery to boot! We expected hot, humid
and buggy conditions. Why go?! We had talked to many
people who had gone and loved it so decided to check
it out. We didn't once have to use bug spray! The
temps varied greatly depending on the region but it
was always quite humid for us being westerners.
Language wasn't a problem as many of the people spoke
some English if they were in any way involved in
tourism. The people were extremely friendly and nice
to us. The food was great..more like ours but
different and definately not Mexican food. Eating out
was cheap! You could eat at a "Soda"...small
restaurant holding maybe six tables. Lunch there was
$2 or $3 and usually rice with some kind of meat sauce
over it. Dinner at a nice restaurant seldom came to
over $50 for the four of us. I think our vacation came
to a little under $4,000 a couple for the two weeks.
However, we did occasionally share a room. Any
"tourist" site fees were expensive, I thought. Usually
$25 to $50 depending. Tourism is their main business
so we told ourselves we were helping them earn a
living. I'll be writing a triplog probably after
Christmas if any of you would like more info, I'd be
glad to send it to you. Carol
