Of course, I have to chime in here. In 2007, I'll be going back to my
third two/three month stay in Venice, after having three Untour visits
there. Denny, with Untours, is fabulous, and takes care of everything.
This next year I'll be staying in an entirely new area for me - the
eastern end of Castello.
In this seventh year in Venice, I've never tired of something to do and
places to see. The neighborhoods tell of the real Venice, not what the
tourists see. Just found out about a neighborhood trattoria off the Via
Garibaldi where I'll be staying. Am looking forward to eating there.
In the smmer of 2007 the Bienalle is staged all over Venice and
headquartered in the eastern gardens. Avante garde art - very
interesting.
One of the day trips I've not seen mentioned is Chioggia. It's a little
fishing village at the western end of Lido. From Venice, go to Lido,
catch a bus to the west end. It gets on a ferry to Pelestrina, then
travels the length of that island. Get off the bus and get on a ferry
to Chioggia.
This is all covered by your vaporetto pass.
One day a week they have a giant flea market. An interesting note: I
was there and needed directions for a fishing tour. Stopped in The
American Bar to ask directions. Noone spoke English! But along the
main street, minimal English is understood.
If you are there in the summer, an overnight to Verona is a must, to
attend an opera in their 200+year-old (or is 2000) colliseum that holds
25000 people, and has no amplification - magnificent!!
Mestra is also interesting for their giant flea market once a week. In
my city of Norfolk, Va the flea markets are junk - not so in the Venice
area.
Hope this piques your interest in Venice.
