I have taken groups to Kandersteg the past two years and stayed at the Hotel Alfa Soleil. They have a great restaurant for dinner there with a lot of Swiss specialties on the menu. I highly recommend the hotel and dining room.
Some one mentioned the tea room near the south end of town and I can second that for lunch as well as their bakery.
This past September we discovered the hike from Selden in the Gasterntal valley. A magnificent walk (mostly down hill) back to Kandersteg. The complete walk is about seven miles but we took our time to enjoy the scenery and made it in about four hours. If you wish, you can catch the one-way road bus back to town about half way.
Also the cable car up to Alpenalp is also worth the trip. The lift station is about a 20 minute walk from the train station.
The boat ride from Thun to Oberhofen Castle (covered by the Swiss rail pass) is great as is visiting the castle and gardens (also free with the pass).
If you like medieval towns don't miss Murten about two hours by train via Bern and for another glorious mountain walk don't miss the Grandmother's Walk from Mannlichen to Kleine Schidegg above Lauterbrunnen. The cruise from Brienz to Interlocken Ost after a day in Ballenberg, the Swiss Outdoor Museum, is the end to a perfect day. .
Hey, I could go on and on and...........
