The Hotel Intercontinental is ideally located -- right on the Danube
-- but a bit expensive. You can see a lot just walking from there --
and the subway station is nearby. There is a Marriott right next
door -- I suspect it would be cheaper.
Subway travel is very convenient in Budapest (and most European
cities!) Buy your subway tickets from the concierge and validate
them in the machine at the station.
Try Robinson's restaurant in the park -- sit upstairs. It's one stop
past the Victory Monument.
There are a lot of very nice restaurants near the Octagon -- it's
also a nearby stop on the subway line.
I was there in August/September -- I think it's getting quite a bit
cooler now.
BTW, if you need any prescription drugs, the 'Apoteka' is a short
walk from the hotel. I replenished my supply of Flonase
(prescription nasal spray that costs US$80 for a one-month supply in
California and is about US$13 in Budapest!) Put any liquid
prescriptions in your checked baggage.
Budapest is a great city -- have fun!
