Hi Jean: You need not worry about flowers! They bloom in profusion all
spring and summer long. Our preferred time to go is mid-May to mid-June.
Holly is correct. Some lifts begin 1 June and everything is up and running
by mid-June. The reason for our preferred time is getting another Spring,
fewer people, and hiking when it is not hot. In mid-May we do our valley
walks, taking the higher hikes in June. As for weather, Mother Nature rules
the roost. I can honestly tell you that after eight trips to the Heartland,
the weather has never been the same twice. Sometimes snow, other times
valley fog, lots of rain, heat waves, etc. etc. That doesn't mean we take
heavy clothing. Layers are the key. This year we began our 4 week trip in
Germany at 3 degrees centigrade., ending in Austria, mid-June at 27C--with a
lot of rain in between. If you are T-shirt and short inclined, late
June/July would be better. Also, you will be able to enjoy the lovely lake
at Lungern, swimming, etc.
As for rail, busses, ferries, postal busses, you have a treat coming. An
unparalleled transit system. You can stop at many villages along the way.
On any given trip you can take the train, get off, take ferries part-way,
get off and take a bus to go through the villages. Hike one way, take a
train back to Lungern. If you are feeling Italian on a given day, hop on
the train early and travel down to Lugano. Likewise, a trip to the French
region is possible. Your Untourist guide books will show you how.
At Lungern you have one of the most popular restaurants at the rail station.
Lungern Bahnhofli. This is the location of the famous coffee, accompanied
by a hollow chocolate cup, filled with heavy cream. Plop it in the cup, and
you have a mocha, purrrr! Also, they are very proud of their "no smoking"
atrium, added a few years ago. They also have regular and small portions
for dinner, priced accordingly. Very friendly, with English menus if
required.
Assume there are trip reports in the archives regarding the apartments.
Others will chime in soon. You can tell it is "high" Untourist
season--Idyllchat is slow.
I am counting the months (10) till our next departure next May. Any other
questions, feel free to ask. Cheers. Joan.
