Sue,
We just returned last Friday from a Tuscany North Untour and spent the =
last 3 nights in Rome before flying out. We stayed at the Hotel =
Colosseum, recommended by Untours. I booked the room through Expedia. =
We booked a family room for 4, so I can't speak to their 2-person rate. =
The location was good and the rooms were air conditioned, which was =
greatly appreciated.
As Scott said, the best trick is to buy your tickets at the Palantine =
Hill site. There was a huge line waiting to buy tickets at the =
Colosseum but almost nobody at the Palantine site, and one ticket gets =
you access to both sites.
On the advice of Scott, we booked a guide for the two mornings we were =
in Rome, and she was well worth every Euro. She met us at our hotel at =
8:30 a.m. and walked with us to the Colosseum and did a 3 hour tour of =
the ruins in that vicinity, really making history come alive for our =
family (my husband, myself, and our two teenagers). The next day we met =
her in line at the Vatican for another 3 hour tour. Each morning we =
were so grateful to have someone so well versed in the history and the =
sights. Let me know if you'd like her name and email address and I'll =
be happy to pass it on.
During our trip we spent one overnight in Florence and were overwhelmed =
by the large number of mostly American tourists. Many groups of 30-50 =
with guides. Rome felt much more reasonable because the sights are =
spread out over a large area. We also liked the strategy of touring in =
the morning, resting for a few hours in the afternoon, and going back =
out for more in the evening.
Happy planning!

Subject: [Idyllchat] Rome questions
We are doing the Tuscany South Untour in September and will be staying =
overnight in Rome. Does anyone have suggestions for a reasonable hotel? =
Also, is it necessary to buy tickets for the Colosseum ahead of time, =
or can you just buy them on site.
Thanks,
Sue
