Oh, I'm glad you asked that! The replies will be interesting.
If I'm pressed for time, I do go to Hofbrauhaus if I have someone with me
just to enjoy the atmosphere. It definitely is touristy and the food is "just
okay". If I go I try not to stay around the bandstand. Far too many times,
some tourist will pay for the right to conduct the band in something like
"New York, New York along with singing it. The worst rendition was from a
Japanese tourist singing it. Oddly enough though, the music selections by tourists
are so bad that there are generally a lot of open seats available in that
area. There are other sections away from the main area that are quieter and
more German.
On a second night, I try to make the Augustiner Garten which is 4-6 blocks
up the main street that runs on the on the right of the Hauptbahnhof. I think
that street is Arnulfstrasse and you can catch a tram that will take up by
it if you don't feel like walking. I don't recall a UBahn entrance up that
way. A more German crowd and I think the food is better.
If I was there a third night, I would try to make one of the others that I
hope is mentioned in some of the hopeful replies to your inquiry.
