[Idyllchat] What can we take on airplanes?

My wife takes needlework projects with her when
we travel, particularly on long flights. About a
year ago rules were eased regarding small, sharp
tools in carry-on luggage. Scissors under 4
inches, for example, are now OK. So, for the past
year, the very tiny scissors she uses to cut bits
of thread and yarn have been going through
security without a problem. That was the case in
mid-November prior to boarding a Swiss
International Airlines flight out of Los Angeles.
Upon return last Friday, however, the scissors
were confiscated by Zürich Airport security
personnel. We protested, asked for a supervisor,
and were shown an illustration showing examples
of banned carry-on items. Their justification to
exclude the scissors was a picture of an open
Swiss Army knife with the small scissors tool
deployed. The scissors my wife lost can easily
and inexpensively be replaced; but beware of
traveling overseas with items in this category
that are antiques or have sentimental value.
