[Idyllchat] What can we take on airplanes?

In response to concerns about what and what cannot be carried on-board a passenger plane embarking from the U.S., as I am involved in Homeland Security, I can assure that TSA authorities do not consider elders as suspicious. But until profiling, or other forms of advanced screening are implemented which narrows the focus on who SHOULD be given extra legitimate security attention, all passengers are treated equally, though there is much common sense discretion given to screening personnel.
As for carry-ons, as long the existing liquids/gels regulations are adhered to, you should be fine. As for prescription medications, you should always carry them with you in your carry-on luggage. Since most medications are in a solid pill or capsule form, TSA screeners are not necessarily concerned with them, and understand the importance of them to their owners. They should always, however, be kept in their original dispensed containers, but they do not necessarily have to be placed in plastic bags, unless, of course, they are in liquid form. But even then, if they are in their original prescription container, they shouldn't cause a problem.
Unfortunately, terrorists have made the existing security measures with regard to flying mandatory. In the near future, for individuals who travel a great deal, the Department of Homeland Security is working on implementing the Registered Traveler program, under which persons can be pre-screened one time in advance by DHS and thereafter allowed to enter designated security lanes at U.S. airports without having to be subjected to the degree of screening one must now go through.
I hope this information helps.
Tony

Hi Phyllis,
Try the official TSA website -- www.tsa.gov. It has lots of information and a way to contact officials if necessary. Assuming that present regulations are still in place when we travel abroad next summer, I am planning to put all non-prescription meds in a plastic bag in my checked bag. My prescriptions will be in my carry-on in their original containers in as many plastic bags as it takes to hold them. I understand the limitation to 3 oz. containers in a single 1 qt. bag applies only to lquids and gels. Just to be extra careful, I'm also going to prepare a list of all my meds and have my doctor sign it.
I hope this strategy is successful. I agree that it is a real pain to be a senior (I'm 80) and have to worry about being treated with suspicion!

Hi All . . .
We're about to fly overseas in a few weeks and am still mistified by what we are allowed and are not allowed to carry on.
I would hate to go without my mediations or to bring them all (including non- prescription meds - Calcium etc) in their original containers.
It's fine for a 20 year old to go without medications - but us older (70 plus) folks require a lot more to keep us ticking.
We've tried several web sites but am still unclear.
Thanks for your help!
Phyllis
