Like Joan, I am a west coaster and almost always do my own flight arrangements as I am an inveterate nut on wanting to know all flight specifics months in advance. My European airport of choice is Amsterdam's Schipol and thus I usually book KLM/Northwest from LAX. KLM's Cityhoppers go to almost any destination you can imagine ion the continent. Schipol is a very tourist friendly airport with lots of shops, internet 'cafe', good food, and an art gallery. Zurich is also very high on my list--when it is possible to fly direct there (at a competitive price!) I probably would put it first. Both feature great rail service.
I heartily second Joan's advice for arriving a day or two?) earlier than your scheduled departure for your Untour apartment. Take advantage of one of Idyll's suggested hotels if you are new to an area so when you arrive at the designated meeting spot you will feel 100% livelier than those who have 'red-eyed' it over!
I cannot think of an airport I dislike more than de Gaulle, though that bias is triggered by several horrid experiences with Air France's seeming cavalier attitude toward its passengers.
