We thoroughly enjoyed Sachseln. It was so nice to return to this =
peaceful town at the end of a long day. This town is not a tourist =
town, which is what I like about it. There's a tourist office at the =
book store. I didn't even know it was there until I inquired about a =
map of the town, and was directed there by a local. It reminds me of =
how it was in the states before shopping malls took over. One of my =
favorite places is the bakery shop. After a long day of walking, I =
didn't have to feel guilty about have a nice dessert. We had dessert =
everyday. We were able to do this because our day usually included an =
average of 8-11 miles walking (We had a pedometer). At the end of our =
vacation, we had only gained one pound.
Interlaken is very touristy. We were there in March. There were a lot =
of American college kids on skiing holiday. They were very loud and =
noisy. I guess we got used to the quiet relaxing train rides with the =
locals. Interlaken is a good place for shopping on a rainy day. I =
remember having lunch at an Italian restaurant, and being served by a =
waitress from England. =20
On our first full day there we walked along the lake path to Sarnen, and =
shopped for groceries at the COOP. We missed the train back, so we =
walked. It takes about an hour, but we didn't mind. We never did get =
back to Sarnen for sightseeing.=20
I have one suggestion: Leave one day early and stay at the Allegra Hotel =
in Kloten (5 minute shuttle ride from the airport). Idyll can make the =
reservation for you. It takes a lot of stress off of you worrying =
whether you'll make it to the airport all the way from Sachseln. On =
your last day you can walk around Kloten or take a short train ride into =
Zurich. =20
If you want to try something unusual, try horse filet with rosti at the =
Rossli Restaurant in Lungern, or Blindekuh in Zurich(Blind waitresses =
serve you in TOTAL darkness). You may have trouble getting reservations =
at Blindekuh unless you call your Sachseln hosts now, and ask them to =
make reservations for you.=20
One last thing : It's a good idea to have a list of places you want to =
go to. At the end of every day, we stopped at the train station in =
Sachseln, and asked the clerk (Barbara Streich and Stefan Gretner were =
very helpful) to print out a train schedule leaving and returning for =
our next day's destination. For example, we would ask for departures =
around 7:00 - 9:00am and returns for 4:00, 5:00, 6:00 and 7:00 pm. That =
way, we would have variety of choices at our finger tips. We could then =
decide when to catch the train back, depending how tired we were. It =
was fun on our first day saying hello to Barbara Streich by name at the =
train station, and seeing the surprised look on her face that total =
strangers knew her name.
When you get back from your trip, let me know any suggestions or you =
have.
