Here's another take on the oil situation from Charles Krauthammer of the 
Washington Post written on May 21:

The idea is to force down consumption, and therefore prices, via an 
adjustable gas tax, the idea being that folks will once again (as in the 
1970s) demand fuel-efficient vehicles.
