Speaking of family reunions, it's true that it really is a wonderful part of
our job to help people with such investigations and meetings. One of my
favourite reunions was last Fall when one lady found all her relatives in
Colmar and they told her all about the family tree which went back so many
centuries they took her to their castle ! They are the descendants of one
of the most influential families in the area. One of them is known for
writing a 12C manuscript known throughout Europe as a masterpiece.
I also remember one man with tears in his eyes as he told us about the
people at the municipal archives who took out an entire folder and spent a
lot of time with him telling him about his family's home. He had known the
address and they had many pictures of it . Of course they had known the
house and it's inhabitants for many years. It had been his grandmothers home
and he had been very close to her.
Did you know that the Amish originate here ? Yes they were Anabaptists from
the region of Bern CH. Because of persecution there they fled and found a
local landowner in Saint-Marie-aux-Mines here in Alsace, to allow them to
settle and farm the land which was quiet and secluded. It is during that
time that there was a dispute between the elders, one of whom was Jacob
Amman who felt they needed to be more strict in their following of the
beliefs and traditions they wanted to uphold. There was schism and those
who followed Jacob were known as the Amish. That is why every September
there is the huge European Patchwork Festival. It's wonderful, the works
here are very creative and use many types of fabric as the valley of St
Marie was later to become a leader in the fabric making business.

If you want to see a couple of pics of an Idyller reunited with a foster
mother who is 95 years old, go to my homepage below and look at reunion
1 and 2. This took place yesterday at the nursing home in Sarnen. The
mother, Frieda, was as bright and chipper as the lady who had not seen
her in almost 60 years.
