At present, a meeting of the European Parliamentary Council is being
held in Luzern. This is only the second time this has occurred. It
usually meets in Strasbourg.
The Swiss are concerned about the upcoming implementation of a bilateral
treaty governing the free movement of people between CH and countries of
the EU. Since there is a massive movement of people from other countries
into Europe, CH would be left in a position of being the only country in
this sphere without a uniform system of handling new people want to stay
in Europe. The Swiss don't always think that EU policies on asylum, but
this would leave them out in the cold unless they agree to abide by the
EU standards.
Like the EU, CH is noting with some alarm, the "rising right" among
groups and parties in CH and Europe. This seems certainly to be fostered
by the influx of those from non-European countries.
