The Wall Street Journal had a fascinating article today (6/3/02) about how 
the writer had a software problem and posted the problem on the web, in order 
to let people around the world bid on the solving the problem.  The winning 
bid (for $25) was from a software engineer in a Third World country.  The 
writer's advice was to stay away from any careers where what you are doing 
can be done online.
