Amen to what Pete recommends. I would add to his "keep your phrase book =
handy" by suggesting that if you have room in your luggage for a small =
paperback dictionary of the language, you might enjoy having that, too.

In Alsace last year, when my anciently acquired high school French =
failed utterly, my phrase book let me down regularly, too. Often, the =
brief glossary in the phrase book wasn't extensive enough to cover much =
more than words helpful to tourists' questions or demands. For example, =
one fractured conversation with our host reached a frustrating impasse =
for him when he was trying to give us the names of the wonderful trees =
around his terrace.
=20
If you want to have a specially delightful time, I suggest you go abroad =
armed with phrase book, dictionary (as English-French and =
French-English), a few skills at charades, and a well-honed sense of =
humor! Relax. You'll have a great time.

Not much if any problems not being even near fluent in Italian.=20
  =20
The best advice is to learn the basic greetings and also how to say =
"Do you speaking English" in the native language. You will get some =
interesting responses, but it will break the ice and the local people =
will appreciate your effort to at least try and converse.=20
  =20
People have told me that the problem with learning the language is =
that sure enough someone will answer you and your next problem will be =
being able to listen to someone speaking to you at a fast pace in that =
language and then having to respond!=20
  =20
Anyway - don't worry - keep your phrase book handy and have fun!
